Happy, Healthy Holiday Tips
|
Oh my gosh--the Holidays!! Cookies, cakes, eggnog, mulled wine, gingerbread...eeek! The pounds! The scale! My jeans!
I'm
not the only one who has these kinds of little freak-outs, right? I
know I can't be alone; why else would there be such a thing as a New
Year's Resolution? These kinds of panicky thoughts run through many of
our minds this time of year.
I call it "Festivity Induced Figure Phobia".
It's when you get scared, or even obsessive, around the holidays
because you're terrified of putting on that holiday weight.
If you find yourself:
- Staying home from Holiday parties in order to avoid "temptation"
- Eschewing all treats during social events, but gorging on the leftovers
- Feeling anxious about the season and it isn't related to paying for all those presents or dealing with family drama...
Then you may be suffering from FIFP*!
But fear not, my friends, you can
weather this crazy season, stay fit, AND have fun...all at the same
time! The keys are awareness and balance. Maintain presence in the
moment: what is going on around you, and more importantly, what is
going on inside you? The more grounded and present you are, the easier
it will be to make the choices that will nourish you best. When you are appropriately nourished--in all the categories of nourishment: food, friends, fun, etc.--you'll be less likely to OVER nourish in areas that are ultimately self-destructive.
Try some of these tips to help you through the seasonal stress:
- Before heading out for the evening, enjoy a small healthy meal at home. You'll be less likely to overdo it on the goodies later.
- Booze has a lot of "empty calories". Plus, too much just leaves you feeling icky the next day. Try and pace yourself by drinking at least one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage.
- Enjoy the company, not the treats. If you're nourished by the conversations and personal interactions, you won't need eggnog or fudge to entertain you.
- Give yourself a break! It's no time to go hog wild, but these holidays do only come around once a year. So let yourself have a bite of that gingerbread; but maybe just the chimney and not the whole house.
And please, enjoy yourself. Pleasure is a vital part of Whole Nourishment as well. So have a great time this season, whatever holiday you celebrate. And Happy New Year!
* FIFP is not an actual disease, condition, or set of diagnosed symptoms. But it's fun to say, isn't it? |
