Greetings,

I believe...

YOU have the power to transform your life.

Your Smart, Sensitive Stomach
Recently I had the pleasure of facilitating the annual Awaken Wellness Spring Cleanse.  It was such a joy to support all of the participants and witness their extraordinary self-discoveries.

Although each cleanse experience is unique, some benefits are pretty much universal.  Most everyone loses a little excess winter weight.  Almost all participants experience a feeling of lightness and increased energy.  And eventually, everyone's digestion and elimination improves.

That's right.  I'm talking poop.  Pooping gets better.

Most of us aren't even aware our "movements" could use some help.  We're so used to chronic constipation or intermittent indigestion, we don't realize there's any other way to be!  Have you ever noticed how many products lining the drug store shelves are aimed at your guts?  Or how many commercials mention IBS, gas, bloating, or other symptoms?

Intestinal discomfort has become such an epidemic because most of us are medicating or ignoring the vital signals our body is sending us.  If you're only "going" every couple of days, or worse yet, having to run to the loo immediately after every meal...your body is trying to tell you something.  It may be indicating something bigger going on, and it's certainly asking for some care and attention.

It doesn't take a lot.  Incorporating some small, simple changes can do a world of good.  You might try eliminating dairy for a little while.  Perhaps you have an undiagnosed sensitivity to gluten and would do well to minimize your wheat consumption.  Maybe it isn't food related at all.  The connection between our guts and our emotions is surprisingly strong and direct.

Whatever the reason, a tiny bit of extra focus and loving care can have you pooping like a pro in no time.

Recipe of the Month #1:  Healing Kudzu Tea
This tea is designed to strengthen digestion, cool the stomach and intestines, increase vitality and reduce fatigue.  Kudzu is a whitish sea vegetable available in the Asian section of health food stores.

Ingredients:
  • 1 - 2 tsp kudzu
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 tsp tamari (wheat-free soy sauce)
Directions:
  1. Dissolve the kudzu in the cold water.
  2. Bring water to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for 3 or 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir in tamari to taste.

Recipe of the Month #2:  Sesame Daikon
DaikonDaikon radish is a great Springtime addition to your diet.  It looks a little like a giant white carrot and is great raw in salads or cooked in a variety of ways.

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup black sesame seeds
  • 2 large daikon radishes, peeled or washed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp umeboshi vinegar (can be found in the Asian section of most markets)
Directions:
  1. Toast the sesame seeds in a heated skillet until they smell nutty.
  2. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Slice radishes into half-moons (lengthwise first, then across).
  4. Steam cook radishes for about 3 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle radishes with the toasted sesame seeds, olive oil, and umeboshi vinegar to taste.
