Awaken Wellness means...

You have the power
to transform your life.

Help Yourself

It's easy to get overwhelmed when you feel like you have to do everything all by yourself.  And it's easy to believe the fallacy that you have to do it all on your own.  You're a responsible grown-up, right?  Taking care of the minutiae of your own life is supposed to be a piece of cake!

Except, it isn't.  Yes, you are a grown-up, and probably a pretty self-empowered one at that.  But you have human limitations.  You are skilled, talented, intelligent, and capable of a lot of stuff...but not everything!  So how can you be expected to be naturally brilliant at all aspects of life?  It isn't possible to be perfect.  Recognizing your own limitations doesn't mean you can't "have it all"; it just means that if you do want more, you're going to have to ask for help.

Many people find it difficult to ask for the help they need. Whether it's because they think they have no right to ask or they're afraid nobody will show up for them, it can be anxiety provoking.  If the thought of asking for help is too paralyzing, there's still a way to get any assistance you need.  Hire it!

Housekeepers, personal assistants, even dogwalkers...they're all there for a reason.  Are you a reasonably neat person, but you hate doing the heavy duty grunt work?  Hire a house cleaner to come in once or twice a month just to tackle the big jobs.  Don't have time for all those errands?  Most drycleaners, pharmacies and even pet stores offer free delivery.  Fresh Direct can bring your groceries (they even offer a wide selection of organics now) and Amazon.com can deliver just about anything else.

There's someone out there to help with just about anything.  The "man with a van" can help move heavy things that are too big for you but too small for a moving company. Freelance tutors will help decipher a new computer program and design students are eager to help decorate your home in exchange for photos to fill out their portfolios.

You don't have to be rich to hire help.  Trading is a great way to get things done.  What can you offer in exchange?  Are you a whiz at budgeting?  Maybe you're a gourmet chef.  When you're able to trade services, you each get something you've wanted or needed, and everybody is better off.

So before you despair that it's all just too hard, think about unexplored avenues of assistance that might be right in front of you.  With a little courage and the willingness to put your ask around, you'll find all the help you need to create the life you desire.

Super Summer Salmon

Humid weather makes most protein sound pretty unappealing.  A light dish of salmon, however, can be a refreshing source for Vitamin D, Omega-3, Vitamins B12 and B3, and other essential nutrients.  It's important to buy your salmon wild though, as the farmed varieties are usually full of chemicals and toxins.  Just like with any food, organic and naturally obtained is always best.

Broiled Salmon on Baby Greens

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pound fresh wild salmon fillets, cut into 4 to six equal portions
  • 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon brown rice syrup or grade B maple syrup
  • 3 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  • 6 cups mesclun or fresh mixed organic baby greens, cleaned and trimmed
  • 5 tablespoons cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons white or red wine
Directions:
  1. In a small bowl, combine the mustard, brown rice syrup, and 1 teaspoon of the balsamic vinegar.  Spread mixture on the salmon fillets and set aside.
  2. Combine the cleaned greens in a large bowl to distribute evenly.  Arrange 1 to 1 1/2 cups of the mixed greens on serving plates.
  3. Broil the salmon fillets for 6 to 10 minutes, or until just cooked through and lightly browned.
  4. Gently heat the olive oil, remaining vinegar and mustard, and the wine in a small skillet.  Be careful not to turn the flame too high.
  5. When the fish is cooked, drizzle the warmed dressing on the greens, placing the fillet on top.  Serve immediately.  (Serves 4 to 6)
